🎉 Plainview ISD Convocation 2024-2025! 🎉 -The Year of the Bulldog- This morning, we officially started the 2024-2025 school year with all staff returning and having our annual convocation! Our Student Council officers kicked things off, followed by the ROTC presenting the flags. Lori Johnson beautifully sang the National Anthem, setting a patriotic tone for the event. We were honored to have our Board members in attendance, including Board President Adam Soto, Vice President Sylvia De La Garza and board member Danny Salazar who shared inspiring words. Special speeches were delivered by our Educators of the Year, Christina Martinez (North Elementary) and Olivia Standfield (intermediate elementary), highlighting the dedication and passion of our teachers. Dr. H.T. Sanchez also addressed the audience with an uplifting speech speaking about what it is to be a PISD Bulldog. Our guest speaker, Rodney Wallace, Ash Principal, shared an impactful message: "We either grow children or we bury them with the dirt we plant with them." His words reminded us of the powerful influence educators have on shaping the future. It was a fantastic start to the new school year, filled with inspiration and excitement. Yesterday our Plainview Bulldog Coaches united for an inspiration kickoff meeting and message. 💪🏽🏅 Tim Siegel, executive director of the Team Luke Hope for Minds Foundation, addressed the Plainview ISD coaching staff to remind them of the impact they have on the lives of the students they coach. Siegel shared the story of his son, Luke, who suffered a traumatic brain injury, and the lessons he learned from being Luke’s caretaker after the injury. In his closing remarks, Siegel recounted a comment someone made to him: “Luke made an impact without ever saying a word.” His message reminded the coaches that simple acts and words of encouragement can have a profound effect on others, and he urged them to be intentional in their actions. The coaches’ meeting began with a brief message from Athletic Director Adrian Alfaro. Alfaro emphasized the importance of togetherness for this school year, stating that each sport is strengthened by the support of all other sports and that each coach benefits from the support of their colleagues. Plainview ISD Superintendent, Dr. H.T. Sanchez, followed Coach Alfaro’s message with an acknowledgment and appreciation for the work the coaches have done for the youth of Plainview. “I’ve seen kids on sports fields this summer. The gyms have been open. On the fields, in the camps, they get to learn from you, and you have an impact on the community,” Sanchez said. He reminded the coaches that, for many of the athletes, they serve as parental figures. Through athletics, the students receive guidance, accountability, and someone willing to teach them about sports and life. Dr. Sanchez concluded his message by encouraging the coaches to pay forward the positive influences they received from their own coaches to the next generation. Coach Siegel then shared part of his personal story, highlighting "Seven Inspirations from Luke," a list of lessons he learned through his experience with his son. The first inspiration is "Find Your Passion," which Siegel explained is not just about having a passion for one's sport, but also for the school, athletes, and fellow coaches. The next is "Don’t Ever Quit," a message Siegel illustrated with an anecdote about a stranger who encouraged him during a difficult time by saying, “I’m praying for you. One foot in front of the other,” before walking away. Siegel encouraged the coaches to "Lean on Friends and Family," stressing the importance of asking others how they are doing, especially when they seem down, and of seeking help when needed instead of bottling up emotions. He continued through the list of inspirations without elaborating on all of them. The list also includes "Be Careful/Make Good Choices," "Have Faith," "Find Forgiveness," and "Legacy (Let a loved one’s legacy live on through you)." Coach Siegel concluded his talk by distributing "Fight Like Luke" wristbands to the coaches and gathering them for a group photo. Coach Siegel has also authored two books based on his experiences following Luke’s accident, titled "It’s In God’s Hands" and "Fight Like Luke." Several coaches received a copy of "Fight Like Luke" during the meeting.
